What data we collect and why
Van registration lookups
When you enter a vehicle registration and click "Value my van", we send that registration to the DVLA Vehicle Enquiry Service API via our server to look up your van's make, year of manufacture, month of first registration, and fuel type.
We do not store your registration number. It's only used for the single lookup, then discarded.
We do record:
- A salted, daily-rotated hash of your IP address (for rate limiting—30 lookups per hour)
- A count of lookups from that hashed IP in the current UTC day
The hash salt changes daily and old hashes are deleted after 2 days. We cannot reverse the hash to identify you.
Affiliate link clicks
When you click a tracked link (e.g. to webuyanyvan or Carwow), we log:
- The slug (which link you clicked)
- The timestamp (UTC)
- Whether your browser user-agent looks like a bot
- The path of the referring page (if it's the same site)
We do not log your IP address, full user-agent string, cookies, or personal identifiers.
This data is used to measure which links are clicked and for reporting to our affiliate partners (aggregated counts only).
Google Analytics
If you consent to analytics cookies (see Cookie Policy), we use Google Analytics 4 to understand how visitors use the site.
Google Analytics collects:
- Pages you visit
- How long you stay
- Broad location (country/region)
- Device and browser type
We do not send Google Analytics:
- Vehicle registration numbers
- Exact mileage figures
- Any free-text input
Google Analytics runs only after you accept analytics cookies. We use Google Consent Mode v2 with analytics_storage set to "denied" by default.

Affiliate partner cookies
When you click through to webuyanyvan, Carwow, or another partner, they may set their own cookies to track your visit and attribute any sale back to us. We don't control those cookies—see the partner's privacy policy:

Legal basis for processing
- DVLA lookups and rate limiting: Legitimate interest (providing the service and preventing abuse)
- Click tracking: Legitimate interest (measuring affiliate performance)
- Google Analytics: Consent (only runs if you accept cookies)
How long we keep data
- Rate-limit hashes: 2 days, then deleted
- Click logs: Indefinitely (aggregated reports only; no personal identifiers)
- Google Analytics: Google's standard retention (26 months by default)
Your rights
Under UK GDPR, you have the right to:
- Access: Ask what data we hold about you (there's very little—see above)
- Rectification: Ask us to correct inaccurate data
- Erasure: Ask us to delete your data
- Object: Object to processing based on legitimate interest
- Withdraw consent: Change your cookie settings any time

Third-party services
We use:
- DVLA Vehicle Enquiry Service: To look up vehicle data (UK government service)
- Google Analytics: To measure site usage (only with consent)
- Krystal hosting: UK-based web hosting (servers in the UK)
We do not sell or share your data with data brokers or advertisers.
Children
This site is not directed at children under 16. We do not knowingly collect data from children.

We may update this policy. Check the "Last updated" date at the top. Major changes will be noted on the site.
